Nearby villages and towns

Jesus Pobre (pronounced Hay-zus Pob-ray)

The village is quite small, virtually consisting of one main street and a square with a few side streets. It is essentially very Spanish but the many English visitors are made very welcome.

There are several shops, including two excellent bakers. There is a bank and for out-of-hours the nearest cash dispensing machines are in Gata de Gorges and Javea. There are three bars and two of them are restaurants also. The nearest and most convenient shop for food is a small supermarket, called La Ermita, which is on the left as you drive to Javea.

Javea

Javea is less than ten minutes away and has a multitude of good Spanish tapas bars and restaurants. It is well worth exploring. Try the area around the fortified church in the centre. The market is also to be found there. Arenal is the busy area of Javea  with a glorious sandy beach with many boutiques, restaurants, bars and night life.

Denia

The international resort town of Denia is about five miles, or ten minutes, away. Denia has a well known reputation as a holiday town and is very popular. It is centred around the old town and castle, with its tree lined main street and a tremendous variety of shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, etc. The beaches are exceptional and stretch for several miles up the coast. It is a multinational resort and most things can be found there, including water sports, tennis, night life, and the ferry to the Balearic islands.

Altea

One of Spain's tranquil towns. A careful development policy means there are more bungalows than high-rise hotels. There is a seaside market on Tuesdays. Altea boasts a number of art galleries  and an artists' colony well-known in the region. On Sundays and fiestas, in the afternoon, traditional games of pelota are played in the narrow streets near the church square.

Calpe

Calpe is a former fishing village that lies at the base of the Peρσn de Ifach, a volcanic rock  rising out of the sea to a height of 1000 ft. You can easily climb this to the top. From here you can catch a glass-bottomed catermaran which takes you around the base of the rock to view the many types of marine life. Also in the port is a fine seafood restaurant renowned for their paella.

Gata de Gorgos

A town on the main Alicante-Valencia road famous for cane, basketwork and furniture.

Benidorm

On of Spain's most famous resorts with round-the-clock fun. The Casino Costa Blanca is here, along with many restaurants, cocktail lounges, bars, discos and nightclubs, not to mention amusements, water slides and ten-pin bowling alleys. Also, there is the old village with the ruins of the old fort blown up by the British and Spanish in 1812 to stop the French from taking it, and the Isla de Benidorm which houses an unofficial bird sanctuary and can be reached by boat in about 20 minutes.

Restaurants and bars

There are a great many restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets. Good 'menu del dias' at lunchtime can be found at the 'Montgo' and at 'Los Almendros' which are opposite each other on the road to Javea. Personal favourites for very Spanish food include the 'Armell' tucked away in the orange groves on the way to Denia, and a little further along the Denia road is the 'Venta de Possa' with excellent dishes, many rice based. The '121' bar is used by the British ex-patriate community and is on the road to Javea.

In Javea, Toni's is another good restaurant in the square below the church. The bar 'Tango' can be found in the port area tucked away under the cliffs right on the beach. Go to the yacht club and it is to be found at the end of the sea wall on your left.

If you arrive late on Saturday there is a large supermarket in Javea, called Mercadona, on the road between the old town and the port but, remember, Spanish restaurants have later eating times than the UK and they stay open later.

Sports and activities available in the local area are golf, sailing, scuba diving, water ski-ing, windsurfing, jet ski, snorkling, canoeing, sea fishing, horse riding,  trekking, walking, climbing, bird watching, go-karting, tennis, and undercover sports in a sports complex.

Within easy driving distance is the Jalon (Hal-lon) valley, the mountains of the interior, Benidirm, Valencia, Alicante and the delights of the Costa Blanca.

There are 'rastros' (flea markets) in Jalon on Saturday mornings and in Teluda on Sunday mornings.

Local goods available nearby are ceramics, from numerous retail outlets on major roads, and wicker, mainly along the main street in Gata de Gorgos.
